The Poison

Nabanita and Miranti were childhood friends in Calcutta, India. They were inseparable for most of their lives until Nabanita, struggling with her mental health, failed an exam and blamed Miranti for it. The last time Miranti saw Nabanita, she offered for Nabanita to come with her and her husband to Indonesia. Nabanita refused, and it wasn't until her daughter moved to Indonesia and ended up becoming a tenant for Miranti that they got in touch again. After their brief encounter, the two women began exchanging letters. Throughout the letters, it's revealed that Nabanita and Miranti, in an arranged marriage and a 'love' marriage respectively, have both experienced abuse at the hands of their husbands.

    The post-mortem report is supposed to reach the police station by 2pm. Although Inspector Agnihotri had been told that the victim died from poisoning, he is waiting for the official documents to arrive before notifying the police team in Indonesia.

    Miranti was arrested on charges of abetment of murder. If the letters she wrote to Nabanita are proven to have incited the incident, Miranti would face a life sentence. Miranti will face a life sentence. Her husband’s lawyers, well-compensated for their efforts, are working tirelessly to secure her release, but seven days have passed without progress.

    Of all the surprises life had thrown her way, Miranti had never expected to see Nabanita again. Not like this. Not in the eyes of her daughter. Miranti had long since grown accustomed to the silence of an empty house after her sons married and moved out.

    Nabanita sits on her hospital bed, with one hand tied to the metal frame with a handcuff. She knows what she had done. Killed a man. A husband. A father. Inspector Agnihotri, accompanied by Inspector Sneha, walks into the room and pulls up two chairs.
