Two Ears to Listen

Randa Khamis

I lay cradled in the land of my mother –
I lay with two ears on either side,
ready to receive

two varying signals.
One ear in pindan shadow,
one ear in white sand light.

My mother signals to me
her lullaby.
I map a full 360 degrees.

In the heart of the land,
I find her.
She has been singing from the beginning.

Nami, Nami
sleep, sleep
my little one.

Whoever does not love you,
whoever does not hear you,
knows not what they miss.

Randa Khamis was born in Jordan and migrated to Australia as a toddler. She learnt English as a second language growing up in Perth. She has an Arts degree from Murdoch University and is now pursuing creative writing for pleasure, inspired by the history of her Middle Eastern heritage.
